Countries I’ve visited

How many countries there really are in the world? I consider that the undisputed countries are the 193 members of the United Nations, plus the two United Nations observer states: Palestine and Vatican.

There are a number of other geopolitical entities that are sometimes counted as countries: Taiwan, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Western Sahara. I have visited a few of those: Hong Kong, Macau, Kosovo, Transnistria. However they are not included in the list below.

Is 117 a lot? Knowing how many experiences are linked to visiting these places, for me it is huge. There are many people though who have visited literally every country in the world. Even more extreme travellers have created ever more inclusive lists, listing every sub-region of every country, and compete in who has visited more of these. My personal quest is to push my boundaries. Visiting new places is an excellent way to do that.
